I was looking around for some website builders and re-discovered the site builder on google.com So here is your Freebie this week, http://googlepages.com . Here is my 20 minute creation SteppingStoneServices.net.
I like:

  • The Simplicity in creating the pages
  • The fact that copying text (including menus) from one page to another keeps the coding behind the text is Great! This makes creating a template and copying it to new pages is really easy.
  • The clean and balanced templates

I Dont like:

  • The simplicity of the system. I want to add text fields and images that are not a part of a long text block
  • The fact that I can not get into the HTML. I have code I need inside the pages
  • The way the pages are managed in the interface.

Because I have been buildign sites for so long and using higher-end software to do it, I may not be the best in judging simple site designers. When I am evaluating an application I look for what it does quickly and easily (low learning curve) and what it has for future expansion of the users skills (advanced features). This is what I like about Dreamweaver, you can make simple sites with little effort but you can grow within the application. FrontPage is another application that is great fo beginners; however, there are more barriers to user growth.

There is a whole host of applications that I would suggest that you avoid. There is no way that I could even begin to list them here so I will identify a few features that I have found problematic.

Avoid:

  • Any application that turns your pages into .gif images on upload.
  • Any application that exclusively uses DIV tags that include specific locations for elements. (the problem is the code gets really cluttered and it is difficult to optomize the site.)
  • Most applications that you get for free or at a “great” discount. (unless you buy it from me) 🙂

So in closing, the googlepages tools are not great and really flashy, but they are clean and easy to get site content up quickly. Also the added bonus… Do you thing Google lists pages built on their system? Bet your bottom dollar they do!

Congressman from California is amazed that he needs to learn Spanish.

Mr. DANIEL E. LUNGREN of California, “So, I went out to the big display they had where they had roped off a part of the parking lot to see what they had, to see what I might want to purchase. I was given a flier. I have a blowup of that flier here. When I was handed the flier, I noticed that it was in Spanish.” You’re in California man, who do you think is going to be buying the $200.00 drill motor?

Iranian President to Visit NY- so what..

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he will not insist on visiting ground zero during his upcoming trip to New York, following an outcry by New Yorkers, the New York Sun newspaper reported on Friday. (9/21/2007)

Why are you people crying that you don’t want him to see a Giant Hole in the Ground?
Ask yourself  a few questions before you start your drum pounding and chanting.
Was he in charge of his country when we were attacked?
Did he have a hand in the attacks?
Does he have the potential to be a Leader of Change in his country?

In case you are having problems with this quiz the answers are Yes, NO, and Yes.
He does not understand the United States and Americans. His only exposure is in the confines of meetings with politicians, generals, and seeing soldiers. Has he experienced the sign waving peace-nick chanting to bring the troops home? NO. Has he experienced the pissed off flag waving demonstrator shouting Terrorist Go Home? NO. Now the big question, should he be exposed to it, Hell Yes.

Let the guy visit the site that so many of our citizens are so empationed about. Let him see how visceral the American public can respond to his presence. Let him see the outcrys of the public against his country-men and his policies.

The news media here in the United States is polluted by the liberal media that is consistently trying to spin everything their way and the conservative side focusing on the extreme differences of the two. Both sides near sighted in their views fighting constantly in words and media. Overseas the press is scrubbed, sanitized and edited to display what the state wants to display. The only way to understand is to see it.

Much like this man needs to see how we have been affected by the 9/11/01 attack and how deeply the emothions run, he also needs to learn by visiting Germany and some concentration camps.

Let him visit, let him see the protestors, let him see the hole, let him see the rebuilding, let him see the memorials, let him interview and listen to our people. All of this may help to remove his head from the dark hole it currently resides inside of protecting him from realities of the world.
Affect the decision makers, change the people that can lead change.

thats all

*It’s all about O.J.

The news bores me, frustrates me, and irritates me. OJ in the news again you would think that we would be done and over with this once and for all.

OJ is suffering this year and this fall is going to be a big one. Florida has planned to spend nearly $4 million dollars this year alone on the issue; however, Crist is considering taking back $2 million. This is a significant blow to the state and it’s potential revenue. “The state is attempting to balance the general revenue budget [on our backs]” said Ken Keck, the department’s executive director. “The concept that we have money lying around is not true,” said Ben Albritton, the commission chairman.

But where is all this OJ money coming from? It appears to be coming from taxes. Every case that gets put out is generating tax revenue. Bolstering a $60.3 million dollar budget according to the 2007-2008 projections. To  generate funds Crist has proposed raising the annual “service charge”.  The proposed increase from 3.3 percent to 8 percent would take $1.98 million out of the department’s current budget, according to the governor’s proposal. Crist’s Sept. 6 proposal totals $983.2 million toward closing the budget gap, estimated at more than $1 billion. (theledger.com)
Cited in the article, “If the Legislature approves the governor’s proposal, most of the money would come off the department’s largest program, television and online advertising for oj, the state’s largest citrus commodity. The current budget calls for spending $15.4 million to purchase TV time and online OJ ads.” If this is what it takes to get OJ out of the media, I am all for it.

Lets just hope that the storms coming in to the East Coast are not going to affect the harvests too much. OJ is already over priced.

But if you have put a few sites online and you enjoy doing it, I need some help doing piece work. It would be a real bonus if you know your way around PHP, Perl, and javascript but it is not required.
I need some help with my work load and I am looking for someone that wants to practice, hone their skills or just plain enjoys building sites. Send me an e-mail if you are interested.
